Zebulun crowned victors of Swimming Carnival

By naveen kumar Primary 5/04/2022

The 2022 Swimming Carnival looked quite different this year, as COVID restrictions prevented us from holding the event at the start of Term 1. We were able to reschedule the event as a ‘competitor only’ event at the Elizabeth Aquadome (indoor) but we certainly missed the community atmosphere of our usual carnival. The modified event saw 42 swimmers nominate across the age group with Mr Loechel, Mrs Robertson and Mrs Clayton (with invaluable help from parents, Mrs Delport and Mrs Wilson) running 4 lanes of the Aquadome. Our numbers were well down compared with a usual year and, indeed, some age groups had no competitors.

Right from the start, it looked like Zebulun would run away with the day, as they had more competitors spread across more events than Benjamin did. The Benjamin swimmers pushed themselves to the best of their ability but there were simply too many Zebulun swimmers signed up for events and swimming well.  There was still plenty of cheering from those waiting to race and a really positive atmosphere but the result was never in doubt; Zebulun were ultimately crowned victors with 786 points to Benjamin’s 494.

The highlight of the day was the close battles being fought for age group champions in several divisions. The U12 girls, U13 girls, U15 boys and Open girls divisions were all won by just two points!

Congratulations to Eliza (Primary Girls 100m Freestyle – 1:42.34) and Jonny (Primary Boys 50m Butterfly – 1:08.86) for breaking school records.
